We should always put our best efforts forward and consider that others do the same. We may feel that others do not respond in kind, but how does that affect us? The tanka form, in which these short lyrics on nature were composed, is that of traditional Japanese poetry. In classical Japanese, the expression meaning 'leaves', kotonoha, is a homonym for 'words'. Both are also written identically, in Kanji characters which join 'say' with 'leaf/leaves'. Kotonoha can also refer to waka, the pre-modern designation for tanka poems.

Read, hear, and listen, but most of all get an understanding. Every piece of poetry tells a story, but every story is not told out loud, or seen with the natural eye.
